From the 16th to the 17th of March 2023, Giuseppe Suaria from CNR-ISMAR participated together with two other European colleagues: Luisa Galgani from GEOMAR, Kiel and Florida Atlantic University (USA) and Alessio Corsi from Université du Littoral Côte d’Opale (France) in the Science is Wonderful!” science fair at Maison de la Poste in Brussels (Belgium).

The “Science is Wonderful!” is an annual event organized by the European Commission that celebrates the value and impact of EU-funded research by giving primary and secondary school students the chance to interact with over 100 leading European researchers and innovators across Europe. The students can learn more about their work in engaging formats and ask questions to the researchers about scientific careers. This year edition interactively showcased research and innovation projects through presentations, hands-on experiments, games and quizzes, specifically designed to inspire primary and secondary school pupils with the wonders of science and its impact on our lives.

NAUTILOS researchers participated to the science fair with a booth called “Trace the trash” organized by the PLOCEAN project (MSCA-GF grant nr. 882682), involving over 4000 pupils and schoolchildren in several marine litter and plastic pollution-related activities. During the fair, schoolchildren from all over Belgium and Europe were able to learn about the problem of plastic pollution in our seas, learn why some kind of plastic items sink while other plastics items will remain afloat, experience how long plastic will remain in the marine environment, search for the hidden microplastics in beach sand and make their pledges for a trash free ocean.
